He knew it. He fucking knew it.

The blue-eyed darling with free milkshakes wasn’t some innocent delivery girl. She’s a trained fucking killer.

He’d be pissed if he weren’t so impressed.

No, he’s pissed. Pissed and… distracted. His phone pings and Seb dares a glance at it.

Hey, Son. When can you come? I’ll book your flight.

Not now, Dad.

He doesn’t have time to type the words. He barely has time to think them. Dante’s running for the door, and Seb’s on his heels.

“Wait.”

Dante turns, weapon in hand. “Why?”

“Because a couple of killers running into a room where a guy’s just been shot may not be the right look.”

The big man hesitates. “We sure he’s dead?”

“As a fucking doornail.” Teo confirms it, tires screeching through the headset.

Dante’s brow furrows. “Matteo? You okay?”

“Dandy.”

A word Seb’s never heard him use before. A sure sign nothing’s dandy. “Teo? Where are you right now?”

“In the van.” An engine revs, a good indication he’s not stationary.

Sebastian cues his mic. “You’re on the run?”

“Always.”

Right. Same’s true for all of them in one way or another.

“I’m checking Wentworth.” Dante holsters his weapon. “Stay here, Seb. No sense both of us getting caught.”

“We’re not getting caught.” Matteo’s breathing hard. Sebastian strains to picture what’s happening. What’s got Brainbow so worked up? Teo never breaks a sweat. Cool under pressure, smarter than him and Dante put together. Matteo Bello doesn’t panic.

If he’s ruffled, something’s very wrong.

Dante meets his eye. He knows it, too. They mute their mics at the same moment. “Not sure what’s happening out there,” Dante says. “But it’s bad.”

“Yeah.” Understatement of the year.

“We need to split up.” Dante pulls on a baseball cap. With his bald scalp covered, the scar mostly masked, he looks almost normal. The guy could be a soccer dad strolling to the vending machine to buy juice for the kids. “If the room service girl comes back—”

“I’ll handle it.” Seb knows she won’t be back.

Annie—or whoever the hell she is—outsmarted them all. She’s probably on her way to Hawaii right now. He’d fucking love to join her. To throttle that delicate throat. Maybe spread sunscreen on her back, easing his hands down as he dots kisses down her—

No. There’s a job to do. “Why don’t I go? You stay here and—”

“No.” Dante’s lumbering out the door. “I got us into this.”

“Fine.” He taps his mic back on. “Teo? Dante’s headed up to check Wentworth. I’m staying in the suite. You got eyes on all the rooms?”

“Yep.”

Seb bites back a comment. Hard to monitor high-tech surveillance while driving a getaway car. If anyone can do it, Matteo can.

What’s he running from? That Dowling guy, probably. He wants to ask, but doesn’t dare. Teo won’t tell him, anyway.

“Stay safe.” He claps Dante’s shoulder, then shoves the door shut behind him. Glances at his phone to see his dad’s calling.

“Hey, Pop.” Picking up his Beretta, he sits and aims at the door. He’s not taking chances on Annie coming back. “How’s it going?”

“Not good, Sebby. Not good.” The old man sighs.
